First-timer's guide
What to Expect on a Luxury Dhow Cruise in Dubai
From the moment you reach the pier to the moment you step back on land: every stage of the evening, what's included, what isn't, and how to make the most of it.
In short: on a luxury dhow cruise in Dubai, expect a relaxed evening on a traditional wooden boat. You board around 8:30 PM, sail for 1.5 to 2 hours, eat from a hotel-catered international buffet with a live cooking station, drink unlimited soft drinks, watch a live Tanoura dance and take in Dubai's lit-up skyline from an open-air upper deck. Hotel transfers and alcohol are not included.
Expectation vs reality
First-timers often arrive with a few wrong ideas. Here's what a dhow cruise is actually like.
"It's a tourist trap with cold, basic food."
Reality: the buffet is catered by the Copthorne Hotel, with a live cooking station serving grilled dishes fresh.
"I'll get seasick."
Reality: the Creek and the Marina canal are sheltered, calm waterways, and the dhow moves slowly.
"It's an open boat with no shade or cooling."
Reality: there's an air-conditioned lower deck as well as the open-air upper deck.
"It takes up the whole night."
Reality: it's 1.5 to 2 hours on the water. You're back by about 10:30 PM.
"It's only for couples."
Reality: families, friends and groups are welcome. Under-3s go free.
"There's a bar on board."
Reality: alcohol isn't served. Soft drinks, tea and coffee are unlimited.

The evening, stage by stage
Times below follow the two-hour Dubai Marina cruise. Creek cruises follow the same order over about 1.5 hours.
-
8:10 – 8:25 PM
Arriving at the pier
Your booking confirmation shows the pier and boarding time. The Marina cruise boards at Dubai Harbour. A crew member checks your name and shows you aboard. Expect other groups arriving at the same time; the dhow is a shared boat unless you book a private one.
Good to know: leave extra time on Friday to Sunday evenings, when traffic around Dubai Marina and JBR is heaviest.
-
8:30 PM
Boarding and welcome drink
Step onto a traditional wooden dhow strung with warm lights. You'll be offered a welcome drink while you settle in. Choose between the air-conditioned lower deck, closest to the buffet, and the open-air upper deck, which has the views.
Good to know: earlier arrivals get the best choice of tables. Window and rail-side seats go first.
-
8:45 PM
Casting off
The engine starts, the dhow leaves the pier and the skyline begins to move past you. On the Marina, expect towers lit from top to bottom on both sides, including Cayan Tower, which twists 90 degrees over its 307-metre height. On the Creek, expect wind-tower houses, souks and moored trading dhows.
-
8:50 PM
Dinner is served
The buffet opens once you're under way. Expect a Copthorne Hotel spread of Arabic and Continental dishes, with plenty of vegetarian choices. All meat is halal.
- Hummus & mezze
- Fresh salads
- Live grill station
- Biryani & curries
- Pasta
- Umm Ali & desserts
Drinks include unlimited soft drinks, water, tea and coffee. You can return to the buffet as often as you like. See the full dhow cruise dinner menu.
Good to know: the first buffet queue is the longest. Wait ten minutes and enjoy the view.
-
9:30 PM
The Tanoura show
Expect the highlight of the entertainment: a Tanoura dancer spinning for minutes at a time in a layered, light-up skirt, set to music. The dance has its roots in Egyptian Sufi tradition and is a staple of Dubai's dhow cruises. Music plays through the rest of the evening.
-
9:50 PM
Upper-deck views and photos
After dinner, most guests climb to the open-air deck. On the Marina, expect JBR, Ain Dubai (the 250-metre wheel on Bluewaters Island) and Atlantis The Palm in the distance. A professional photographer is on board; ask the crew about photos.
Good to know: from December to February the breeze on the upper deck can feel cool. Bring a light layer.
-
10:30 PM
Back on land
The dhow returns to the same pier. You're free well before midnight, with time for a stroll along Marina Walk or a ride back to your hotel.
Landmark heights: SOM (Cayan Tower), Ain Dubai. Timings and inclusions: Premium Dhow Cruise Marina.

What the atmosphere is like on board
Expect a relaxed, social evening rather than a formal dinner. Unless you book a private dhow, you'll share the boat with other couples, families and groups. The mood builds gently: quiet conversation as you board, a busier buzz around the buffet, then everyone turns to watch the Tanoura dancer.
The lighting is warm and low, the music is in the background rather than club-loud, and the pace is slow. Nobody rushes you off your table. Families are welcome on every route, so expect a family-friendly feel. If you'd prefer something quieter, choose a weeknight, when boats are usually less busy, or book a private dhow for your group.
What you shouldn't expect is a party boat or a fine-dining restaurant with table service. A dhow cruise sits in between: a comfortable, all-in-one evening where the view does most of the work.
Before you go: a quick checklist
Tick these off before you leave for the pier.
Expecting something special?
Many guests book a dhow cruise for a reason: an anniversary, a proposal, a birthday or a family get-together. Tell the team when you book, and ask about a private dhow if you'd like the boat to yourselves. Couples should read our guide to the best romantic dhow cruise in Dubai.
